If anyone can take her career to the next level while stuck, it’s Billie Eilish. The Los Angeles Wunderkind achieved superstardom, above all, with an album she made at home with her brother and producer Finneas. “She will continue to prove herself in the arena scenes and at awards shows, but Eilish is a threshold spirit, making very private music that attracts millions, and she does it again with sophisticated, sweet singles.”; My future”. released tonight.
Over a few simple chord changes from a soft vintage synthetic, Eilish starts the song in a smooth and pleasant way. This is Billie AMSR – but also jazz Billie, moving beyond the stardom of adolescence to stay on satin alongside vocal stylists like Jorja Smith and Corinne Bailey Rae – talented and serious artists just as interested in the history of chanteuse as they are in trends current. There are even shades of universal appeal achieved, in her best songs, by Adele.
The sound is subdued, but the text and its golden delivery take very giant Eilishian steps. Against a narcissistic friend, the singer decides to partner with a being (presence? Realm?) Who really loves her: the future itself, firmly cast as feminine. “I can’t wait to meet him,” he murmured. “I’m in love, but not with anyone else.” As the beating begins with a slight turn towards bossa nova, Eilish’s voice loses its hiccup-y whispers, growing confident and calm. Finnea’s supporting vocals support her steps towards freedom: “You are so beautiful,” she sings to her naughty beau, “but I know better than to take you home.” The song ends again in the private sphere of voice and keyboard: “I will see you in two years”, she utters that dream.
Eilish represents a generation that is now going through an important youthful quarantine moment – mostly with family members, often online, but importantly, also in solitude. “My Future” offers encouragement to those new fans. OK it is okay to focus on yourself, she says, you will grow. The lyrical video by Australian animator Andrew Onorato casts Eilish like a fairytale heroine wrapped in a beanstark dress elevating her towards the stars. Like the song, it resides within the magic cultivated by a young autonomous woman, who is ready to claim her future when she comes.
