Consumer spending rose 5.6% in June

U.S. consumers increased spending 5.6% in June, but appear to have retreated since then, limiting the recovery of the economy from the coronavirus outbreak.

The Commerce Department’s June report marked the second month of higher spending after falling steeply in the spring during widespread closures to improve the pandemic. The department also said household income fell 1.1% in June, a factor in Americans’ ability and willingness to spend and help set the course for the economy in the coming weeks and months.
