The growth rate in new cases in the state has slowed over the past two weeks after a sharp climb for most of July, according to the state early warning dashboard that is updated on Friday.

Over the weekend, the Lehigh Valley saw 65 new cases of the virus and one new death.

The region is concluding its first Musikfest ̵

1; and hopefully the last – with fireworks on Sunday night. The daily state update of COVID-19 was delayed on Sunday due to scheduled IT maintenance.

  • 4,968 cases and 337 deaths in Lehigh County, an increase of 49 new cases.
  • 3,928 cases and 2920 deaths in Northampton County, an increase of 44 cases.

Lehigh County had 104 cases confirmed last week, up from 177 last week, according to the state early warning chart, which is updated Friday. The county positivity rate fell to 3.1% this week, from 4% a week ago.

(The state calculates the percentage positive based on total tests, including duplications. This method sets the Pennsylvania positive rate to 4.1% over the past week. Another method, used by lehighvalleylive.com and Johns Hopkins University, calculates percentage of positivity based on individuals tested, eliminating duplicate tests – this method shows nationwide positivity at 5.1% over the last seven days.)

The lower the level of positivity, the more likely it is that the test will catch the full spread of the virus in a community. On the other hand, the high rate of positivity indicates that only the sickest people are being tested – meaning that people with little or no symptoms may not knowingly spread the virus.
