Cr Crocodiles of terror ‘from 82 million years ago had banana-sized teeth

Massive ‘horror crocodiles’ roamed the earth at least 75 million years ago, but have remained a mystery among the scientific community – until now.

The paleontologist examined the fossilized jaws that belonged to a number of Deinoschus, finding that the beasts had ‘banana-sized’ teeth with overwhelming power to knock down even the largest dinosaurs.

Remains suggest that these creatures had a long, broad snake, with a swollen area around its nose, which has not been seen in any other crocodile – neither alive nor extinct.

The team believes Deinoschus terrorized suspicious creatures that came to the water̵

There are three known species of Deinosuchus: Deinosuchus hatcheri, Deinosuchus riograndensis and Deinosuchus schwimmeri.

Fossilized remains of these creatures have only been discovered in North America, mainly in the west and along the Atlantic coast.

However, Deinosuchus, starting at 33 meters tall, has been known as one of the largest, if not the largest, crocodile genera.

And experts say the fir creature along with the largest predatory dinosaurs 75 to 82 million years ago.

However, before the last study, paleontologists had only creature craniums and bite marks on other dinosaur bones.

Dr. Adam Cossette, who led the study, now confirms Deinosuchus fed large dinosaurs.

‘Deinosuchus was a giant that must have terrorized dinosaurs coming to the water’s edge to drink,’ said Cosette, of the College of Technology in New York, Department of Osteopathic Medicine at Arkansas State University.

‘Until now, the complete animal was unknown. These new specimens we examined reveal a strange, monstrous, toothed banana-sized predator. ‘

Although the genus name means ‘terror crocodile’, experts say they are more similar to alligators.

However, their large skulls do not match those of an alligator or crocodile.

Co-author Stephanie Drumheller-Horton, a paleontologist at the University of Tennessee, added: ‘Deinosuchus appears to have been an opportunistic predator, and given that he was so large, almost everything in his habitat was on the menu.’

“We actually have numerous examples of bite marks made by D. riograndensis and a species newly described in this study, D. schwimmeri, on turtle shells and dinosaur bones.”

They are said to have disappeared from Earth before the main event of mass extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs, but the reason remains a mystery.

Chrisopher Brochu, co-author of the study from the University of Iowa, said: ‘It was a strange animal.’

‘This shows that crocodiles are not’ living fossils’ that have not changed since the age of the dinosaurs. They have evolved as dynamically as any other group. ‘

HOW DINOSAURS SHOULD BE SPENDED BY 66 MILLION YEARS AGO

Dinosaurs ruled and dominated the Earth about 66 million years ago, before they suddenly disappeared.

The Cretan-Tertiary extinction event is the name given to this mass extinction.

It was believed for many years that the changing climate destroyed the food chain of large reptiles.

In the 1980s, paleontologists discovered a layer of iridium.

This is an element that is rare on Earth, but found in large quantities in space.

When this was dated, it coincided exactly with when the dinosaurs disappeared from the fossil record.

A decade later, scientists discovered the Chicxulub Crater at the top of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, which dates back to the period in question.

The scientific consensus now says that these two factors are related and they both were probably caused by a major asteroid collision on Earth.

With the predicted magnitude and speed of impact, the collision would cause a large shock wave and trigger a seismic activity.

The consequences would create plains of ash likely to cover the entire planet and make it impossible for dinosaurs to survive.

Other animals and plant species had a shorter time span between generations, which allowed them to survive.

There are several other theories as to what caused the decay of the famous animals.

An early theory was that small mammals ate dinosaur eggs and another suggests that toxic angiosperms (flowering plants) killed them.
