Only a fighter can match Daniel Cormier if he is able to regain the UFC heavyweight belt from Stipe Miocic on Saturday night at UFC 252, according to promotion president Dana White.
“He would be neck and neck for the biggest outing with [Georges] St-Pierre, “White said Wednesday during a live-streamed interview with Yahoo! Sport Kevin Iole.” I mean, GSP left with the title, then came back, won the 185 185 title, and then left again. “
Cormier has said that his trilogy with Miocic will be the last fight of his decorated career. The former two-division champion aims to make his second UFC heavyweight title victory his swan song, though the White and Cormier squad believe he can continue to compete at a high level.
If this is for Cormier, White said it̵7;s a good way out.
“The nice thing about this is, it’s probably the best trilogy we’ve ever had in the UFC, and it’s about the heavyweight championship and determining who the GOAT is,” White said.
The return of St-Pierre in 2017 was quite well received by White, but the subsequent retirement of a better place than once was not positive of the country. After lightweight UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov tried to make a fight with St-Pierre, White was greeted with the idea, saying the former champion was “given bail” with a promise to protect the middleweight belt he caught from Michael Bisping. Recently, however, White has changed his mind to see Nurmagomedov vs St-Pierre.
White has not figured out what he wants to do with heavyweight division if Cormier wins and then leaves the belt blank. Asked about a possible fight between one-time title opponent Francis Ngannou and current lightweight king Jon Jones, the UFC executor was hesitant to outline any plans.
“That’s a lot of ifs,” White said. “We’ll see what happens.”
White is questioning less of what happens to heavyweight division and more of how a classic rivalry will play out.
“Normally, I can tell you what I expect from a war,” he said. “I do not know what to expect in this. I expect these guys to come out and start cursing like they did in the first two fights. Where it goes from there, I have no idea.”
