Stories have made the rounds about how these tubes of cloth worn over the face offer no protection against the spread of coronavirus, citing a study published in Science Advances by Duke University researchers. But, according to the study authors, those reports do not tell the whole story.
The researchers sought to develop and test a method for evaluating different efficiencies, from N95 masks to bandanas, in stopping the spread of respiratory droplets in the air. Current research suggests that through those points of respiration, which we expel when we speak, shout, sneeze, cough, or sing.
They tested 14 different face masks in all, most of which were fabric masks just like the ones you cannow They also tested a neck shell and a bandana. The results of their tests show that bandanas and furs transfer as many or more points of breath as they do not hold any kind of face covering.
However, researchers say these results should not be extrapolated to all neck bandages and gaiters out there. Dr. Martin Fischer, one of the study’s authors, told CNET, “Our work focused on developing a technique that could be replicated in other laboratories, rather than a comprehensive test of masks. As we said in the paper, our work was a preliminary study that included only a fur mask (also called a shell mask, or neck gaiter) – we did not do a systematic study involving many masks, speakers, and clothing conditions.More studies are needed to make specific recommendations for use. “
Neck abductors have become a popular face covering because they can be worn many ways and typicallylike a face mask does.
