Electronic artist Flying Lotus, FKA singer and songwriter, Anglo-Indian jazz cauldron Sarathy Korwar and synth-pop master Vince Clarke were among the big winners as the Indian community gathered on Wednesday evening (August 12th) for the 10th anniversary of the Independent Music Awards, held practically for the first time.
Lotus Flying snagged the best independent track (for “More” featuring Anderson .Paak) and Korwar More Achievement released the best independent album.
“It feels like a real blessing to be able to get an award and get to know each other in these times when they make us feel like our work is not essential and what we do is right, whatever,”; Flying Enthusiastic Lotus (real name Steven Ellison). “So thank you for the memory that what we do is very important.”
Also overnight, the FKA twigs filled the best [difficult] the second album for her praises Magdalena, which peaked at number 21 on the UK Official Album List last November, and Moses Boyd scored independent UK honors.
One of the highlights of the thefts came when Erasure reunited on stage for a premiere of their new single “Elbow Nerves”, a convenient moment as singer-songwriter and keyboardist Vince Clarke collected the Special Recognition Award, a category of new. Clarke was created for his work at Erasure, Yazoo and the Depeche Mode Hall of Famers and “his outstanding contribution to synth-pop,” organizers say.
In the industry award categories, Helen Smith, executive chairman of the independent lobby organizations of music companies IMPALA, was named “Indie Champion”, and late drummer Tony Allen was posthumously honored with outstanding contribution to music delivery.
Allen’s career was celebrated by a show featuring Blur and Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn, and a special tribute curated by Ezra Collective Femi Koleoso.
A pioneer afrobat drummer, Allen died April 30 in Paris at the age of 79, leaving behind a considerable legacy.
The Nigerian artist was well known for his work with Fela Kuti and, later, with Albarn’s project The Good, The Bad & The Queen, the French electronic duo Air and others.
At the time of his passing, Brian Eno hailed Allen as “perhaps the greatest drummer who ever lived,” while Pepper Red Hot Chili Flea hailed him as “one of the greatest drummers to ever walk this earth.”
As part of the celebration of Allen’s life and work, Koleoso curated a special medle by gathering UK jazz favorites Nubya Garcia, Mutale Chashi, Tobi Adenaike, Elias Atkinson, Richie Seivwright, Deschanel Gordon and Junior Alli.
