Nico Hulkenberg ran around his first day at Racing Point RP20 after his 11th call to drive for the team this weekend.
He completed the sixth fastest practice on Friday after leaving Germany yesterday to pick up Sergio Perez’s car.
“The last 24 hours have been a bit special,” Hulkenberg said. “Crazy and wild.
“At 4:30 yesterday afternoon I got the call, I got a plane here. There was a convenient place until 2 o’clock last night. Then 8 o’clock in the morning in the simulator for an hour, a little preparatory work, so it was a short night. But all worth it.
“It was a great effort by the team, I want to thank the team and the night shift guys who did an amazing job of fitting me in the car and even quite quiet and the FIA to turn it so much fat into “Super license. It was very special.”;
The short simulator session gave Hulkenberg a chance to learn the basics of RP20.
“I got stuck pretty quickly with things. It was just a little bit to get used to the steering wheel and some of the functions. We don’t have time because I also had to be tested.”
Hulkenberg has not driven an F1 car since December last year, and he admitted to feeling the strain on his body after his first day at RP20.
“We took the program, in many rounds, which I feel. I’m really jumping into the cold water here. I think my body will feel it tomorrow and the next day. It’s definitely a big challenge but I’m not ashamed of it. “
“The G forces are difficult to train because it is so unique and so special,” he added. “Although I’m in good condition these kind of G-force and especially here, one of the fastest, fastest speed tracks. And 35 degrees, I also pick the hottest day in the UK so far. I I got the best of everything. “

He said the car felt “completely different” from the Renault he drove last year. “I tried to open it step by step today, to get up quickly with the car, to figure it out,” he said.
“It only takes time to absorb everything, to understand it, to know how to manage it and to learn. Of course there is more time tonight to focus on learning. All I can say is that it is very fast here, nowadays. “
After finishing his first day of practice, six-tenths of a second behind teammate and pacemaker Lance Stroll, Hulkenberg says there is a lot to come from him tomorrow.
“You see the great potential,” he said. “The car is massively fast.
“I did not use the high tire well, I think I have a little more in the bag and I have to use that tire better. But this is what we will work on, obviously, at night and trying to get as much best possible from the car this weekend. “
