- Microsoft has confirmed that the Surface Duo has a unlockable bootloader.
- This means you can root it, modify it and buy custom ROMs in it.
There is some good news for those who buy the $ 1,400 Microsoft Surface Duo. Aside from the fact that the dual-screen Android device will receive three years of operating system updates, Microsoft has also confirmed (h / t XDA Developers) that there will be an elusive bootloader.
This means you will be able to get root access to the device, buy custom ROMs in it, modify it, play with hidden features and more. However, Microsoft has not confirmed whether unlocking the bootloader will void the warranty or not.
We’ll also have to wait and see what the fashionable community displays for the Surface Duo. It’s an expensive device to buy and you would not want to browse the root unless it is worth it. Unlocking the bootloader of a phone is a bit of luck. If you make a mistake, you could end up with a brick phone or a device stuck in the bootloop.
However, it is good to see that Microsoft is giving this opportunity to users. Smartphone manufacturers are increasingly tightening security on their devices and finding phones that you can root or modify to your heart’s content is becoming less common day by day. So who is thinking of installing Windows 10 on the Surface Duo?
