‘O’s upcoming powerful cover explains Oprah Winfrey’s absence
On the cover of the upcoming September 2020 edition of , instead of a photograph of Winfrey in some sort of fall setting, readers will instead see a presentation of a digital artist of the murdered Kentucky resident Breonna Taylor.
It is the first time in the existence of the magazine that Winfrey has not appeared on the cover.
Taylor was killed in March 2020 by police who had entered the apartment she shared with her boyfriend. He, in the chaotic moment, opened fire. Officers returned fire, killing 26-year-old Taylor.
In the issue of the magazine, Winfrey explains her absence from the cover.
“I often think of Breonna Taylor,” she writes. “She was the same age as the two girls from my school in South Africa who have been quarantined with Stedman and me since March … Their whole lives shine with the light of hope. This was taken from Breonna “In such a horrible way. What he knows for sure: We can not be silent. We must use whatever megaphone we have to shout for justice.”
“And that ‘s why Breonna Taylor is in the cover of magazine, ”said Winfrey.
