Onions sold to Trader Joe and Ralphs in the western US are remembered

A limited amount of red and yellow onions sold in the food chains of the Trader Joe and Ralphs trade in the West are being remembered in connection with an ongoing salmonella outbreak, Progressive Produc said on Monday.

Thomson International Inc., the California company identified by the Food and Drug Administration as the potential source of the outbreak, supplied onions affected in the Progressive Product, the company said.

Progressive Production said recalled onions are normally sold cheap in wholesale bins and that its red onions carry a PLU adhesive called Pacific Gold.

The company said the recalled red onions were sold at Trader Joe locations in Arizona, California, Utah and Nevada. The affected yellow onions were sold only in California at Ralphs stores.

No other product sold by Progressive Production is remembered.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Salmonella Newport has infected 640 people and sent 85 to hospital. There were no deaths related to the blast, which was identified on July 1

0 and has since risen.

The agency said the illnesses started in mid-June and mid-July.
