Pitt County community testing tests are positive for COVID-19

GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) – An employee of the Pitt County Department of Health who worked at the COVID-19 Winterville community fire testing site tested positive for the virus.

On Thursday, Pitt County Director of Health, Dr. John Silvernail was notified that the employee tested positive for COVID-19. The employee had recently worked at one of the COVID-19 Community Testing sites, organized by the Pitt County Department of Health.

The employee started showing symptoms on Sunday, August 2 and is currently at home in solitary confinement.

Two days earlier, on July 31

, staff members had been working at the COVID-19 Community Testing Site at the Winterville Community Fire Department, located at 2564 Mill Street in Winterville. Other staff members who had contacted this employee have been tested and are in self-quarantine, awaiting results.

Although the employee interacted with the public at the event, the health department says community testing procedures and safety precautions, including the correct use of personal protective equipment, have kept the public risk of COVID-19 transmission very low.

Officials say anyone who wants to be re-voted, however, can come to any of the other possible locations.

No additional impact on the COVID-19 Community Testing Program is expected. Testing will continue for the planned duration of the program until August 14th.
