Portland protesters and rebels turned into a federal court late Wednesday late Thursday morning, starting fireworks toward police, shining lasers in officers’ eyes and spraying at least one policeman with paint, authorities said Thursday in morning.

Instead, some members of the group allegedly responded by shining lasers on the faces of the officers making the announcements. Others blocked traffic and started at least a small fire in front of a nearby area, authorities said.
Police declared an illegal assembly shortly after 11:30 a.m., but events continued to escalate.
“A large explosive and other fireworks were thrown at the officers, along with fist-sized rocks, bottles and cans of paint,” police said.

By midnight, police classified the illegal assembly as a riot, at which point the group allegedly relocated back to the court area.
“They threw eggs and continued to start commercial-scale fireworks towards the officers,” police said.
The crowd had dispersed around 2:30 a.m., but not before someone vandalized a police car parked in the area.
During the night, officers used tear gas to disperse the crowd. Several people were arrested and numerous police officers were injured, including one who suffered severe hand injuries.
Protests have been held overnight in the city since the murder of George Floyd police in May, a black man who died after a white officer pressed a knee to the neck for nearly nine minutes.

Protests in Portland culminated last month outside federal court, with demonstrators clashing overnight with federal agents sent to the city to protect the courtroom.
The demonstrations were reduced after a withdrawal of agents, who were replaced by Oregon state troops. But the protests that turned violent resumed last week.
