You know Fast and furious crossroads existed before last week when the game was released on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One?
The game enjoyed almost zero buzz, except for a trailer debut in 2019 at The Game Awards. No copy of the review was sent out for print, and there did not appear to be any marketing campaign for it – a strange situation for a licensed game associated with one of the most successful movie franchises of all time. It features the resemblance and voice acting talent of stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Sonequa Martin-Green, Peter Stormare and Asia Kate Dillon, among others.
despite Fast and furious crossroads̵6;impressive cast and the success of its source material – although its release feels a bit more casual, now that the latest Fast and Furious movie has been delayed for a year – it looks like the game was sent to the world to die a quick death, with silent hope, never to speak again.
I understand that impulse, especially after playing the game itself. Fast and furious crossroads it is not a total destruction, but numerous fundamental problems destroy every chance it had of being satisfying.
A criminal underground of thieves on the highway
crossroads introduces a new crew of street and illegal runners led by Vienna Cole (Martin-Green). They operate in the world of fast and furious movies, and when they find themselves over their head, they manage to contact a person who may be able to help: Letty (Rodriguez), who gets the rest of the ” family “. .
The story involves an undercover, historic criminal organization of highway thieves crashing into game heroes, boosting stocks as cars fly through the air, smashing balls involved, and vehicles turning into mobile hacker platforms. It’s all about what you would expect from a fast and furious story: minimal logic, but lots of mayhem. The sound actors all sound like they are trying, which is a positive sign in this kind of licensed game, but the rest crossroads can not continue with the caste efforts to make something out of this mess.
You will control different characters in each mission, sometimes jumping between them many times in a single mission, though the game will tell you when to do so. All the big stars are there, but it is the younger members of the castles that do most of the heavy lifting. I do not even want to guess if any of these are considered canon, or what this means for this particular franchise as well.
crossroads it is not a racing game, as so few of the missions involve racing. It is not an open world game, as there is no open world, and almost no freedom in how you handle each mission or even how you get to the next section. Plays like this: You learn something about history, travel to the next area, maybe fight some other cars on the road, maybe do some tricks, maybe race, maybe just driving the car. And then there’s another cut, and then, you run somewhere else.
There is no overlapping map, and no way to explore these environments on their own. Rather, the campaign involves driving pieces separated by short pieces of characters talking to each other, before returning to the road heading towards your next destination. Sometimes that car is a race; other times, you will have to fight moving weapon platforms; and sometimes you’re just … driving to get somewhere.
Which is a problem, because driving is cruel. Every trip from point A to point B keeps you boxed on a single path, and this path is poorly communicated. This led to numerous collisions, where I thought I could go somewhere, just to crash into an invisible wall. The game includes takedown attacks that you can use to smash enemy cars into each other or on the side of the road, seemingly set up straight from the Burnout series, but without any attention to that series for detail or sense of fun.
There is only one camera angle and it does a poor job of showing what is going on. You can play with a keyboard on the PC, but the game will not tell you which buttons they make, showing only instructions to the controllers. When and if you manage to successfully think about which buttons do the right thing, just be careful that you get stuck with that configuration, as there is no way to catch the keyboard controls at all.
crossroads explains so little. Despite admiring the idea of a dangerous car, in which I held an unstable form of fuel that could blow up if I got into a collision, it was tedious to actually do it. I was able to bump into so many things before the match finally told me it was enough. What is the difference between the first head-on collision and the third? I do not know.
The game would never tell me when my load was close to exploding, until it happened, and even then, I didn’t have a chance to see it. This is fast and furious – why introduce what it’s like a car bomb just to blow off the screen if you have to fail in the challenge? Isn’t the whole series about cars making silly jumps and going as things explode right and left?
Put aside all those frustrations and linear games, and not even basic driving controls crossroads. Just as every aspect of running, from rushing to handling the use of handbrake and nitrogen, is handled by another team, each of which flips a coin to see if they were going for something like realism or a more arcade method suitable for the feel of the series. The results make it impossible to figure out how my car will react in each situation, until it happens.
crossroads there is also a multiplayer option, which at least Sounds fun, but there are not enough people playing this game, so it is not applicable unless you are looking for a “waiting for a game” simulator.
All of this, and publisher Bandai Namco still charge $ 59.99 for the launch game, while also offering a $ 29.99 season fee that takes you “three extra packages loaded with new cars, personalization items and more!”
Mediocre games happen, often despite everyone’s best efforts, but it is this apparent attempt to start the game under the radar, offering big-name recognition but nothing more than that, moving Fast and furious crossroads from the “these happen” pile to the “transparent cash” buckets. The good news is that, based on the 27 (mostly negative) Steam reviews so far and the long wait to find someone to play with online, almost no one was fooled.
Fast and furious crossroads is now on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game was reviewed on PC. You can find additional information about Polygon ethics policy here.
