Analysis: SEC reportedly to switch to 10-Game Conference Program for Football Season
(07:21)

With college football schedules across the country in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the SEC announced on Thursday afternoon that it has switched to a 10-match program, just conference for the 2020 season. The SEC is also postponing the start of its season to on Saturday, September 26, what was originally scheduled to be Week 4 of the 2020 campaign.

With the shift of the start of its season to September 26, the SEC Championship Game will be postponed back two weeks until Saturday, December 1

9th. This creates flexibility between teams with two cosmetic game options as the adjusted schedule will feature an average week-by-day season for each school and an open date for all programs on December 12, one week before the title game.

It is unknown at this time how the SEC will complete the two extra matches of its conference program only, as the revised group of games will be announced by the league at a later date. SEC members traditionally play eight conference matches each season: six within their respective divisions, one permanent cross-division opponent and one cross-rotation opponent.

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey explained the conference decision in a statement:

“This new plan for a football schedule is in line with the educational goals of our universities to allow safe and orderly return to the campus of their student population and to ensure a healthy learning environment during these unique circumstances presented by COVID virus 19. This new schedule supports the security measures taken by each of our institutions to ensure the health of our campus communities ….

“We believe that these schedule adjustments provide the best opportunity to complete a full season giving us the ability to adapt to the fluid nature of the virus and the flexibility to adjust schedules as needed if outages occur. “It is unfortunate that some of the traditional non-realities of the conference may not occur in 2020 under this plan, but these are unique circumstances, and hopefully temporary, which call for unconventional measures.”

The 14 SEC presidents actually met on Thursday to reach this planning decision a day after the league’s athletic directors proposed sticking to a single conference model.

The SEC joins the Big Ten and Pac-12 in deciding to play a single conference schedule in 2020. The ACC announced Wednesday that it will play an 11-match program with 10 interactive races and a non-conference game.

It is unknown at this time how the SEC decision may affect the ACC’s planning plans by considering four major non-conference rivalry games (Florida-Florida State, Clemson-South Carolina, Georgia-Georgia Tech, Kentucky- Louisville) will lose with the SEC move. Auburn-North Carolina and Arkansas-Notre Dame were other SEC-ACC games scheduled this season. (Irish fighters are acting as a full member of the ACC in 2020.)

Other marquee non-conference games featuring SEC teams that will lose this season include LSU-Texas and Tennessee-Oklahoma. (Alabama-USC was previously canceled due to the announcement of Pac-12 planning.) The Big 12 has not yet announced any strong plans for its 2020 schedules, though losing those games could affect the decision-making process its.
