With college football schedules nationwide flocking to the COVID-19 pandemic, the SEC will announce on Thursday afternoon that it will switch to a 10-game program, just a conference for the 2020 season, according to AL.com and Illustrated Sports. The SEC will also postpone the start of its season until Saturday, September 26, what was originally scheduled to be Week 4 of the 2020 campaign.

It is unknown at this time how the SEC will complete the two extra matches of its conference-only program. League members traditionally play eight league matches each season: six within their respective divisions, a permanent cross-division opponent and a rotating cross-opponent.

With the season shift to September 26, the SEC Championship Game will be postponed back two weeks until Saturday, December 1

9th.

The 14 SEC presidents actually met on Thursday to reach this planning decision a day after the league’s athletic directors proposed sticking to a single conference model.

The SEC joins the Big Ten and Pac-12 in deciding to play a single conference schedule in 2020. The ACC announced Wednesday that it will play an 11-match program with 10 interactive races and a non-conference game.

It is unknown at this time how the SEC decision may affect the ACC’s planning plans by considering four major non-conference rivalry games (Florida-Florida State, Clemson-South Carolina, Georgia-Georgia Tech, Kentucky- Louisville) will lose with the SEC move. Auburn was also set to play North Carolina this season.

Other games left without matches taken by SEC teams this season were LSU-Texas and Tennessee-Oklahoma. The Big 12 has yet to announce any strong plans for its 2020 schedules, though the loss of those games could affect its decision-making process.

CBS Sports will update this news story soon.
