Power Five conference commissioners met on Sunday to discuss the sustainability of the college football season 2020 game this fall amid the coronavirus pandemic, multiple CBS Sports sources say. The commissioners will meet again on Monday morning. Appreciation from top-ranking athletic voices at conferences is that playing college football or any sport this fall is unlikely.

ESPN initially reported what was considered an “emergency”

; meeting, citing several sources. However, Sunday’s meeting was planned in advance and not unplanned, sources say for CBS Sports.

“It’s an ongoing conversation we’ve had for weeks,” Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby told CBS Sports on Sunday night. “We talk almost every day. I’m not aware that decisions have been made.”

He added: “You do not want to believe everything you read. It was a regularly scheduled call. We talked about a whole bunch of different things. We would all be less than honest if we did not accept that the lines of trends are worrying and the last two weeks or three weeks have not been positive. “

CBS Sports reported on Saturday that two Power Five athletic directors estimated that the cancellation of the fall sports and the 2020 college football season was an ‘inevitable’ conclusion to talks within their respective conferences.

“I think it ‘s inevitable [the season will not be played in the fall], “said a veteran Power Five veteran director on Saturday.

“It’s not fair what we are doing to our coaches and student-athletes,” another longtime Power Five AD said on Saturday. “The sooner we reach a conclusion, the better.”

Neither AD wanted to be identified because of the sensitivity of the situation.

A recent discussion among Big Ten presidents was reported to be the impetus for the meeting as league presidents appear to be trying to cancel their conference season and hoped to see where ACC, Big 12, Pac-12 stand. and SEC.

Big Ten presidents still do not have to vote on whether to cancel fall sports in 2020, CBS Sports reported on Saturday.

Bowlsby is not sure if the Power Five Conferences will join in a decision to cancel the season. “Ultimately, we have to do what is best for our league,” he said.

MAC on Saturday became the first FBS conference to cancel its college football season 2020. UConn, an independent program, canceled its season on Wednesday.

“I’m thinking it ‘s when, not if [the 2020 season is canceled], “said the second after Christ.”[The MAC announcement] adds more momentum to the finish line. I think everyone’s medical team is now telling everyone the same thing. “We all continue to have the same conversations.”

More than 30 power five players, including many possible first-round pickers, have chosen not to play in 2020 citing health concerns.

The presidents of Pac-12 will meet in a regularly scheduled call on Tuesday. A Power Five source told CBS Sports they believe the Pac-12 is “very close to voting”. The ACC, Big 12 and SEC have also scheduled regular meetings this coming week.

The Big Ten on Saturday announced it was “indefinitely” delaying a move to phase 3 practice that would allow players to use cushions. Detroit Press Free reported that Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren is believed to prefer to try to play a season in the spring of 2021. The Big Ten was the first conference to announce it would switch to a conference-only program a few weeks ago.
