TCL has introduced its new lineup of 4K between 5 and 6-series televisions for 2020. As in previous years, they pack high-value, well-designed, four HDMI ports and integrated Roku software that can eliminate the need to purchase a transmission device. Most importantly, they also contain full support for HDR standards, so you won’t be left out of the next HDR-powered game, Super Bowl, whenever that is. It features what TCL calls the “HDR Pro Pack”, with support for Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG. However, what guarantees your most attention are the premium features, such as the QLED screens rich in contrast and the accurate brightness of the Mini-LED, which have dropped in price range and are much more affordable.
At the low end, the 5-series 5-inch TV (model 50S535) costs $ 400 and has a QLED display, a 60Hz refresh panel, and 40 local dark areas. Definitely not the option you want if you want the most cinematic experience or one that suits fast-paced gaming, but a $ 400 QLED TV? Excellent is the new 5-series TCL are also available in a $ 55 55-inch model and a $ 630 65-inch model, each with a slight flap in the dark local areas at 48 and 56, respectively.
The new 6-series TCL also has QLED, but more importantly, it has mini-LED lighting, which was one of the main selling points of the 8-series high-end model from last year that rarely fell below $ 1,000. With Mini-LED backlighting, there is a huge increase in local dark areas, so you will not notice the splotchy part of the screen as much as when you are looking at something that is dark and atmospheric. Moreover, every 6-series TV supports the variable refresh rate with support up to 120Hz, which you will want if you plan to connect a PS5 or an Xbox Series X when they come out later this year.
To that end, TCL says the 6th series is the first TV to feature THX Certified Game Mode, which promises to thrill gamers “without any compromise on ultra-low gaming”. This model starts at $ 650 for the 55-inch version, going up to $ 900 for the 65-inch TV, and finally, $ 1,400 for the larger 75-inch model.
