today away released for Oculus Quest with PC crossplay and the update resulted in some major PC Onward changes. The fans are not happy.
As a result of the port, the PC version of Onward has been glued to v1.8, which includes dramatic map changes to accommodate for changes made to get the game run in Quest. Previously, Downpour Interactive had told us these changes would be mainly in the form of appearance change, removing some features that the search could not have now like extra leaf, etc. But it seems more dramatic than that. The Onward Discord server is a steady stream of users dissatisfied with updating and posting various new bug reports.
After reading about Reddit Onward VR comments, new PC VR user reviews, Discord reviews, and testing the new PC version 1.8 for myself, the differences are pretty clear. Everydo map now looks visually minimized visually, suffers from pop-up issues that hinder the Quest version, and is generally of lower quality now.
Late last month, Dev Blog hinted at these changes, but it didn’t look as dramatic as it seems now.
On the bright side, the update has resulted in significant stability and performance improvements on the PC. Users who previously had trouble saving the frame are likely to now have a much smoother game to enjoy. Furthermore, KasperVid, a Community Manager at Disward Discord, claims that the new game structure will allow more powerful and feature-rich updates in the future:
“We’ve been rewriting and rebuilding large parts of the game over the past few months,” KasperVid says on Discord. “On the one hand we have created tons of headphones for future improvements and stretching in the game, on the other hand there is the temporary pain we are experiencing now. And I fully understand that it is disappointing. But we have been working on this game for many years, “We are committed to it. That will not change, so please give us some credit for doing it right, soon.”
Furthermore, MrDeathpwn, an ongoing Community Manager at Reddit, also clarifies, “I and the devils have recorded all your comments and we will do our best to resolve these issues as soon as possible. I will share all feedback with “Let ‘s make this a situation 2 steps forward and 1 step back.”
We have managed to head directly to Downpour Interactive for additional comments and will update this post as soon as we hear back. Tell us what you think of the 1.8 update on PC down at comments below!
