It is not clear how many cases have been linked to “The Gym” in California, but county health officials say an outbreak is considered three or more cases from different families derived from a specific location.
“Gym” did not immediately respond to a request from CNN for comment.
The Pacific Beach gym remained open despite an order to close home operations to prevent the virus from spreading. A letter was sent to the business on July 23 and it was told to close immediately, but it was not closed until a few days later, on July 27, county health officials say.
According to San Diego Health Officer Wilma Wooten, any business or entity that violates the order faces a $ 1,000 offense and a fine.
County officials say they need to step up efforts to track contacts and crack down on savage offenders. They have issued numerous letters to local businesses, including gyms and restaurants.
Fitness centers have struggled with how to keep clients safe while working out.
“We will continue to take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our community, and have taken a number of steps at all of our locations, which include enhanced cleaning and sanitation policies and procedures, extensive staff training , physical distancing measures etc. reducing physical touch points in the club with no touch control, and more, “according to McCall Gosselin, senior communications vice president for Planet Fitness.
