This Republican governor simply compared children going to school to the assassination of Osama bin Laden

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (yes, again he) seemed to have lost that class in the school of politicians.

“Martin County Superintendent Laurie Gaylord told me she saw the reopening of her schools as a mission similar to a Navy SEAL operation. Just as SEALs overcame obstacles to bring Osama bin Laden to justice, so the Martin County School system will find a way to provide parents with a meaningful choice of in-person instruction or continuing distance learning.

No no

Look, there is no doubt that decisions made by administrators, parents and politicians whether children should go back to school amid the still ongoing coronavirus pandemic is a very, very difficult question ̵

1; with good people on all sides. her. It is a public health argument. An economic argument. An educational argument. And in and over and over.

But none of this is in any way comparable to a naval SEALS group that killed Bin Laden. Yes, fare.

I think what DeSantis would be looking for was the idea that even after one of the helicopters crashed during the attack on the Bin Laden complex, the SEAL team was still continuing to complete their mission. And so, even though there are all sorts of challenges to sending kids back to school, will Florida overcome those hurdles to make sure parents have the choice between personal and virtual learning? I think?

It’s just a horrible comparison. As if I was late for work due to an accident on the Beltway and I said: “J“As the SEALs overcame obstacles to bring Osama bin Laden to justice, so did I find a way to get to work today.”

Or if my flight was canceled but I got another one and said: “Just si th“The SEALs overcame obstacles to bring Osama bin Laden to justice, so I found a way to get to Atlanta.”

Right? Right!

The DeSantis comparison comes in the middle of the un-made decision taken by school districts across the state of Florida. At an event earlier this week in Hillsborough County, which last week voted only for virtual school for the first month of school, the governor dismissed health concerns by offering this: “Nothing is life-threatening.”

Which, again, true! But there is a big difference between adult men who have registered to be CLOTHING taking on a mission they know to be extremely dangerous, and children (and teachers and parents) who go back to school without science on this virus by was fully worked alone.

In his handling of Covid-19 in his state (and in many other things as well), DeSantis seems to be getting his signs of leadership directly from President Donald Trump.

“I want to open schools,” Trump told Fox Business Network’s Maria Bartiromo on Thursday morning. “They have to be open. The kids, if you look at it, are statistically incredible how strong they are. Their immune systems are incredible. We have to open our schools.”

Which, well, okay. But even Trump did not go so far as to compare attempts to deliver personal lessons with the operation to assassinate bin Laden.

Even Donald Trump, Governors DeSantis.
