During a discussion about the Justice Department investigation into Russia, business anchor Fox Maria Bartiromo asked the President if FBI Director Christopher Wray should step down.
“We know the FBI lied to the Senate in February 2018. Christopher Wray was running the FBI. Mr. President, is Christopher Wray hiding all these things and defending the FBI? Should he leave?” Asked Bartiromo.
“So Christopher Wray settled there. We have an election coming up. I wish he was next, he certainly has not been. There are documents they want to get, and we have said we want t “We are going to find out if he will give them those documents. But of course he has been very, very protective,” the president told Fox Business.
CNN has reached out to the FBI and the Department of Justice.
Trump told Fox Business that Wray “settled there for a good reason, he was chosen by a certain person, and I told him, go ahead, decide whoever you want. I’m very honest I said you can decide “Whoever you want. Let ‘s see how Wray turns out. He will either come out one way or the other.”
He continued, “Bill Barr has a chance to be the greatest of all time. But if he wants to be politically correct, he will simply be another guy.”
Barr said in an interview broadcast Wednesday that he is aiming to draw some conclusions from the Durham investigation ahead of the November election, setting a more detailed point in a timeline that has changed in recent weeks and also opening up the possibility that the review to be able to stretch in the winter.
“We are all aware of the calendar and will do nothing to influence an election, but we are trying to accomplish a few things before the election,” Barr told conservative commentator Buck Sexton.
Trump has been unhappy with Wray for a variety of perceived errors, mostly related to conservative complaints that the FBI did not cooperate with efforts to review the 2016-2017 Russia investigation.
Fox News hosts and conservative media have attacked Wray over the issue, although there is no evidence the FBI and Wray have been uncooperative.
Barr has also come to Wray’s defense, saying the FBI director has cooperated with the numerous examinations Barr has ordered in dealing with the FBI on sensitive issues.
