The age range for children varied by state, with some children defining themselves as just those up to the age of 14 and one state – Alabama – pushing the border to 24.
More than 1,000 daily deaths were reported in 5 days
Some parents and teachers have protested strongly against a return to instruction of persons at a time when the virus is still out of control across the country.
The U.S. topped five million infections reported over the weekend, and at least 162,938 people have died since the pandemic began – more than in every other place in the world.
The country reported more than 1,000 daily deaths for at least five consecutive days through Saturday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. As of July 21, there have been only four days during which the U.S. registered less than 1000 virus-related victims.
In Florida, which saw a shocking blow on occasions over the summer, Sunday marked the thirteenth consecutive day the state reported more than 6,000 new positive tests in a single day, according to a CNN report.
State and local officials have linked the resurgence to cases of large group rallies and more infections among young people..
Dr. Anthony Fauci urged young people last week to pay attention to the guidelines, saying during a webinar with the Alliance for Health Policy, “do not be weak in the chain”.
“This is the message we have to get to young people,” he said. “Obviously they are not doing anything on purpose and malice, but what they are doing is unintentional – they are spreading the explosion.”
60 violations in bars and restaurants
Despite constant warnings, it is still business as usual in some parts of the country.
Many Americans are still moving as much as they did before the pandemic, according to Dr. Christopher Murray, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.
“If you look at the mobility data collected by cell phones in many parts of the country, we’re almost back to pre-Covid mobility levels, so we just aren’t as careful as other people are in other countries.” Murray previously told CNN.
In other countries, non-compliance with security precautions has led to consequences.
At least 60 bars and restaurants in New York were released with coronavirus-related violations on Friday and Saturday, according to a news release from the governor’s office.
“We need the NYPD to grow and help New York City and we need local governments across the board to do their job as well,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo.
